20 June 2015 – Music & Arts Festival – 12 hours of live music
After many years working in schools in Dubai, Val and her husband Trevor moved to rural France for a new life. Trevor is now performing as part of a music duo called Freefalling, and ‘Serendipity’ was started by Val Marks-Smith last year as an outlet for her creative side.
Serendipity is all about making something out of a happy coincidence or find, whether it be transforming a piece of furniture or creating unique jewellery. Val makes costume jewellery, and as well as making bracelets, necklaces and earrings from scratch, she has been asked many times now to transform old family pieces into something more modern, so that they don’t just sit in a drawer. ‘Actually wearing something that has been passed down is a fitting way to pay tribute to someone we cherished’ says Val.
‘The same goes for furniture…..an old piece can be given a new lease of life with some fresh upholstery and new fabric. I am using all the skills taught by my parents… mum was a seamstress and all round craft person, whilst dad was a toolmaker, all the time fixing things. It is marvellous that I now have the time to develop my interests whilst living in the Charente!’
